For Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
At Ranken’s Summer Adventure Academies, students get fun, hands-on experiences with technology. They learn about career paths in technical industries while they have the experience of a lifetime.
Each program encourages students to design, create, think and work through hands-on activities. Over the course of the week, students complete a project and often get to take home their unique creations!
All A-Bot Robots – Robots may be the future of technology, and they are definitely fun to make and program! Students will develop their engineering and technology skills using NXT robots, gears, motors, and sensors while building a robot to maneuver through an obstacle course.
Advanced Robotics – This camp is designed for students who have prior robotics experience either through Ranken’s All A-Bot Robots camp or participation on an FLL team. Student will design & build robotic manipulators (arms, masts, shooters, and grippers) using the TETRIX Prime building set. Students will develop engineering skills to control their robots autonomously by remote control.
Aviation Technology – Students will get an introduction to aircraft maintenance, the joys of flight, and what it takes to keep ‘em flying. We’ll explore careers available to aviators, experience the thrill of flying in an actual airplane, build & launch model rockets, fly balsa gliders, and have fun team building!
Design & Build @ TechShop – Students will learn the basics of operating a full array of tools and machines at TechShop. Using digital design software, students will design & create logos with a variety of materials using laser cutters, 3D printers, desktop CNC mills, and more. Students will gain a solid understanding of what it takes to go from idea to design to creation and be certified to use these tools at TechShop for future projects. This camp will be held at TechShop, 4260 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63108. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and provide their own transportation.
Design & Build for Girls @ TechShop – Students will learn the basics of operating a full array of tools and machines at TechShop.
Design and Engineering – Dream, design, and engineer it! Learn manufacturing processes from blueprints and design to prototype production and quality control! Explore how your idea can come to life with Mastercam and Solidworks software. Students will use state-of-the-art Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machines to machine and assemble projects and experience 3D printing.
EV3 Robotics & Racing @ the Academy of Racing – The first half of the day, students race electric-powered racing karts learning basic principles like “the line,” acceleration, braking, & race craft. Campers will work with LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 in the afternoon, building, programming, and testing their solutions based on real-life robotics technology.
Heavy Metals – Use raw metal to create your own designs! Participants will learn the fundamentals of welding, from simple techniques to more complex ones. By the end of the camp, students will design and fabricate their very own creative concept, learn some basic blacksmith skills, explore Oxy fuel cutting, how to operate a drill press, and walk away with a metal masterpiece.
Studio to Street – Calling all girls! Interested in jewelry design and creating wearable art? Students will use a variety of materials such as glass, clay and metal to make pendants, earrings and bracelets. Students will gain real world experiences by working with small businesses and local artists.
Summer Racers – Want to know how a real race team works? Our summer racers will build their own car, practice team building skills, and learn about automotive careers. Students will learn how a go-kart works, how to use tools, how pit stops win a race, and how to drive a real go-kart safely!
Website Design – Learn how to design your very own website and present your ideas to the world! Interactive web activities will engage each student in the popular fundamentals of web design, using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Wood Works – Design it and build it! Students will construct their own project from start to finish using a variety of woodworking and power tools. This program will familiarize students with fundamental construction techniques, shop and safety skills, and provide them with fun, constructive entertainment.
