Automotive Maintenance, 1973
“Why do I have great memories about Ranken after more than thirty-three years? Because it is not just about a 100-year old institution, but more so about the staff that was assembled to ensure that young men and women learned a skilled trade that would allow them to provide for their families, and maybe, give back to their community and industry at a later date.”
It’s been 34 years since Ron Ray graduated from the Automotive Maintenance Technology program at Ranken Technical College, yet the 1973 alum continues to credit Ranken for “the technical and mental edge it (Ranken) gave me on getting to where I am today.”
And today, as executive director of I-CAR Education Foundation, Ray is responsible for a foundation that supports secondary and post-secondary schools that provide education and training for collision repair.
Over the course of his career, Ray has worked in independent automobile shops, and at a dealership as a service adviser and technician before moving into technical training positions at Volkswagen of America, Porsche Cars of North America and American Honda Motor Company.
An advocate for sharing information and improving training and learning opportunities, his career has focused on the development and management of technical training. He has participated in numerous National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) workshops, has assisted with course development for I-CAR courses and has bylined in support of technical schools, including Ranken, in Profit magazine an industry publication serving the collision repair business.
An avid learner and consummate professional, Ray has maintained his Master Automobile Technician certification status with ASE since 1976.
