» Certificate and Seminar Programs in Green and Solar Technology - new at Ranken!

Ranken is dedicated to training students with the most up-to-date technology and equipment. “Green” technology is the wave of the future and Ranken is providing students with the necessary skills to stay on the edge of this new revolution in sustainable energy.
According to the US Department of Energy, Photovoltaic (PV) technology is a young, growing high-tech industry that is going to create jobs and strengthen the economy. PV makes use of the abundant energy of the sun and has little or no negative impact on our environment. It can be used in a wide range of products, from small consumer items to large commercial solar electric systems. Within
the next 10 years, PV electricity will be competitive in price with traditional sources of electricity and will become widely utilized. Now is the time to learn how to work with this important new technology and help reduce the world’s carbon footprint.
Classes in PV will start in 2010. The courses will be held on
Ranken’s campus, two evenings per week.
Coursework Includes:
- Grid Tied Systems
- Solar Thermal Applications
- Hybrid Systems
- Rainwater Systems
Introduction to Solar Photovoltaic Systems Participants will understand the fundamental concepts required for working safely with PV systems, and will learn residential-sized, code compliant, battery powered stand alone systems. This in-person workshop will provide an overview of the basic PV system applications. The goal of this course is to create a fundamental understanding of the core concepts necessary to work with both residential and commercial PV systems. Topics include: system components, site analysis, PV module criteria, mounting solutions, safety, and commissioning.
Grid Tied and Hybrid Solar Photovoltaic Systems This course encompasses design criteria with NEC Compliance. It is a hands-on workshop for students who are interested in solar electricity. It follows our first tier of workshops with the next level of design criteria, wire sizing calculations, maintenance issues, troubleshooting skill, and more information on batteries, charge controllers and hybrid systems. Prerequisite: Introduction to Solar Photovoltaics.
Solar Hot Water Installation Participants in this workshop will learn from the theory, design considerations and installation techniques necessary to install and maintain a solar domestic hot water system. Passive solar water heaters, drainback systems, antifreeze systems and photovoltaic powered systems are all discussed, as well as an introduction to pool heating. Solar collectors, mounting systems, pumps, blowers, controls, storage tanks, heat exchangers, maintenance and more will be covered in this course.
Rainwater Systems Design The objective of this course is for students to be able to select the most appropriate rainwater systems, as well as install, maintain, repair and service any of the common types of the harvesting systems.
Ranken is Going “Green”
