“I knew I wanted to work with my hands, and also knew I didn’t want
to do the same thing in an office every day. With Ranken’s HVAC program,
I’m learning the skills that will give me the career flexibility that
I want. I can be out in the field working on installation and repairs, or working
in sales and support. I can go into management as well. I have a hands-on career
and I’ve kept my options open, and that’s important to me.”

Students in Ranken’s Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration
Technology (HVACR) program enjoy two years of instruction and training in the
following areas:
- Applied electrical circuits
- Basic refrigeration and electricity
- Gas, oil and electric furnaces
- Materials and equipment
- Problem diagnosis
- Refrigeration part replacement
- Sheet metal
During the first semester of this program, students will share the same curriculum
as Industrial Technology (INT) students. Students who are undecided between
the two programs may wait until the second semester to declare their major.
Graduates are prepared for employment as HVACR technicians, with the option
to work in general service or specialize in a particular field, such as residential
air conditioning, commercial refrigeration or heating equipment. In addition,
they also work in sales or maintenance at industrial plants, hotels, hospitals
and apartments that utilize large refrigeration, air conditioning and heating
systems. The average salary three to four years out of school is $40,000 to
$50,000 per year.
