"I love being able to take raw materials and turn them into a finished, useful product. In the carpentry program I am learning to manage construction projects from start to finish. Next year our class is building a house in the community. Knowing hat someone will live in the structure you're building and seeing that house go from a bare lot to a finished home, that's a great feeling."

Ranken’s two-year Carpentry and Building Construction Technology (CRP)
program teaches students the following skills:
- Estimating building loads and selecting structural lumber, steel beams
and concrete
- Manipulating power tools and stationary machinery
- Obtaining building permits and inspections
- Reading and interpreting residential blueprints, shop drawings and building
codes
During their second year, students oversee all stages of construction—foundation,
frame, roof, interior and exterior finishing—through participation in
Ranken’s Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization
that constructs affordable homes for neighborhood residents.
Graduates are qualified for jobs in new construction or home remodeling. Approximately
three-fourths of all CRP students start as second year apprentices upon graduation
and use their training at Ranken to accelerate through the program. Average
salaries with three to four years experience range from $50,000 to $52,000 per
year.
